Workout Programs For Beginners

Maybe you’ve never really been into fitness all that much, or it has been years since you’ve exercised and don’t really know where to start.  Which workout program should you choose?  I feel like a lot of people jump right into P90X or Insanity, but in my opinion, that’s really not a great idea.  Why?  Because they are extreme programs!  In my opinion, Insanity is the hardest workout program put on DVD.  You can absolutely modify the moves and go at your own pace, but even this can be discouraging for someone who isn’t in very good shape.  I’m not saying you can’t get good results with P90X or Insanity if you’re just starting out, but I’d rather see you work your way to those programs so make sure you stay motivated to actually do your workouts.  So here are a couple options that I think are great workouts for beginners:

Power 90  This is the pre-cursor to P90X (Power 90 Extreme).  It’s still Tony being Tony, but the workouts aren’t quite as intense and you’re not doing a bunch of pull-ups all the time like in P90X.  This is an awesome place to start if you’re not quite ready to step up to P90X.  And you can absolutely see great results with it, just check out Colin and Chris.  They both saw awesome results with Power 90.  You get a good mix of resistance training with cardio moves so it’s a great way to build a base as you work up to P90X.

Slim in 6  Here’s a great option, geared more towards women, that can get great results in 6 weeks.  I haven’t personally done this workout, but from seeing the results and testimonies of people who have, you can tell it really works.  It’s a shorter program, just 6 weeks, so it gives you a manageable time frame to work with just starting off.

Hip Hop Abs  If you like Shaun T but you’re not quite ready for Insanity or Asylum, Hip Hop Abs would be a great place to start.  Plus if you like dancing and are coordinated (this would not be me) I’m guessing you would really enjoy the program.  Shaun utilizes the Tilt, Tuck, Tighten methods throughout these workout programs to help you burn calories and sculpt your abs.  Again, if you want to move on to Insanity or Asylum later, I would highly suggest starting here.

These are all great workout programs for beginners.  The key here is not getting discouraged.  If you’re just starting out and you’re jumping into something like P90X or Insanity, that can get really discouraging because they are extreme!  You can absolutely get great results with those programs, but I think it’s a better idea to start out here, especially if you don’t have an extensive fitness background.
