Who is Feeding America?

who is feeding americaLike I mentioned in my post about the November Beachbody Deals, there is a unique opportunity to give back when you make an order.  For every Shakeology order, Beachbody is donating $10 to Feeding America, and for every Challenge Pack order they are giving $20 to Feeding America.  So I thought it would be a good idea to research who Feeding America is and what they’re all about.

Why The Need?

So why does Feeding America even exist in the first place?  According to their website, www.feedingamerica.org, 1 in 6 people in America deal with hunger issues.  That equates to millions of people who are struggling to put food on the table.  In 2012 49 million Americans lived in food insecure households, 15.9 million of which were children.

So it’s a real problem.  Many Americans are facing hunger and have a need that Feeding America is trying to help fill.

What Does Feeding America Do?

Feeding America knows hunger is a complex issue and has many ways that they help out.  Their mission is “To feed America’s hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger.”  They have quite a few different programs for children and adults.

For kids, they have programs such as Kids Cafe and their BackPack program.  Kids Cafe provides free meals and snacks to low-income children at locations that kids normally congregate after school is out such as Boys and Girls Clubs or churches.  The BackPack program sends kids home on the weekend from school with bags of food prepared by local food banks.

For adults they have several programs, most of which partner with local food banks to provide meals to low-income households in their area.  Many have a focused market, such as their Commodity Supplemental Food Program which focuses on providing meals to seniors who face hunger.

Team Beachbody & Feeding America

As I already mentioned, this month Team Beachbody is partnering with Feeding America to help fight hunger.  It may not sound like much that $10 or $20 of your order goes to them, but $1 will actually provide 9 meals, so you can really make a big impact.  Here’s a short video to explain more about the partnership:
