When Will I See Results?

resultzYou’ve just started your new program.  You’re working out hard and trying to eat healthy.  But when will you see results?  I have people ask me this all the time, and it’s understandable.  You want to see the results quickly, which most people do.  I know I was the same way when I first started out.  So when should you start to see results?

DOMS Affecting Your Results

DOMS or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness is something everyone experiences when they start a new program.  If you’re not sore after your first P90X or Insanity workouts then you’re not pushing yourself hard enough.  I still get really sore when I switch from one program to another.  Being sore isn’t a bad thing, it means you’re challenging yourself in the workouts.  Here’s what I do to help my sore muscles recover.

So what does that have to do with your results?  Well when your muscles are extremely sore, they tend to store water as water brings nutrients to help repair your muscles.  So in your first week, you’re going to be sore and your body is hanging on to more water than usual.  This alone causes you to hold on to extra water weight.  If you see the scale bump up initially, this is typically why.  Don’t get discouraged, it’s just your body repairing itself and it’s totally normal.  It will go away after a week or two.

When Will I See Results – Expectations

I want to set your expectations at a reasonable point too.  So many people see shows like The Biggest Loser and expect to lose 10 lbs their first week.  That’s just not realistic.  One of Tony Horton’s popular quotes is “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was your body“.  Did you put on the 40-50+ lbs that you need to lose in one month?  Probably not.  I’m guessing it’s been many months or possibly years that you’ve put on the weight you need to lose.  If it took that long to put on, don’t expect to lose it all the first week and month!  Healthy weight loss should be roughly 1-3 lbs a week.  I know that might not sound like much initially, but over 60 or 90 days it really does have a dramatic impact.

Success takes time.  Many people, including myself, need multiple rounds of workouts to realize their goals.  You need to view this as a long term process.  Sure you can see significant change after one round of Insanity, P90X, TurboFire, etc., but if you just did one round and then went back to what you’re doing before what would be the point?

When I Started Seeing Results

Of course I want to share with your my experience.  The first program I started out with was Insanity.  I saw an infomercial for it and liked how you didn’t need any equipment, so I decided to give it a try.  During the first month, I didn’t miss a workout.  But I also did not follow the nutrition guide.  So guess what?  I ended up losing zero lbs.  Putting in all that hard work and staying at 217 lbs was a little discouraging.  I could tell my endurance was better, but that was it.  Thankfully I found my coach and realized that I was sabotaging myself by not eating properly.

So for month 2, I decided to follow the nutrition guide to a T.  Plus my wife was away for 3 week for work and I wanted to surprise her when she got back.  So I stuck to my 1900 calorie fat shredder diet, incorporating Shakeology every day.  I didn’t cheat once and my results showed.  I dropped 17 lbs that month!  I was pumped!  That showed me that if I stuck with my nutrition, I could really reach my goals.  I wasn’t exactly “ripped” but I had lost a lot of fat.  Here are my Day 1-Day 60 pics:

That was a pretty significant change.  After finishing Insanity, I decided to tackle P90X to lose some more weight and build muscle.  During the next 90 days I had a blast working out with Tony and was totally committed to the program.  I lost another 10 lbs to get my down to 190 lbs and definitely increased my muscle mass.

Over the rest of that first year I continued to challenge myself and continued to stick to my nutrition.  I actually finished the year with a vegan diet for 3 months as I did another round of P90X.  So this is what a full year of sticking with your diet looks like.

Don’t Give Up

So my message is that you need to stick with it!  Your results will come, it just may take longer than you want.  If you push yourself in the workouts, stick to your nutrition and actually track what you eat you will see the results you want.  It might take 90, 180 or even 360 days but you will get there!  Don’t let the scale discourage you after one or two weeks!
