When Should I Exercise?

when should I exerciseThis is a common question, especially when people are starting out with a fitness program.  When should I exercise?  Should I do my workout in the morning?  On my lunch break?  Is working out at night ok to do?  It’s a great question, and one I’ve actually addressed before in my article, The Best Time To Workout.  I wanted to bring it up again, though, as many people are just starting out or getting in gear with their workouts again.

When Should I Exercise? – Morning Workouts

My natural response to the question ‘When Should I Exercise?‘ is that you should exercise in the morning.  In my mind, the morning is the best time by far to get your workout in.  Typically no one is up that early, there are no distractions, and you can get it done and not think about it for the rest of the day.  You can take steps towards your goals while everyone else is sleeping.

When you decide that you’ll get your workout in “sometime” during the day, that often leads to procrastination.  You’re busy, I get that.  So when you don’t really plan it into your schedule, other things will always pop up and distract you.  If you workout at night, you might have a social event, have to work late, etc.  And then you end up skipping your workout.  Whereas in the morning, that’s not going to happen.  Or at least it’s going to be very rare.  It’s time you have to yourself with no one trying to get a hold of you.  The only thing that might get in the way is the snooze button on your alarm 🙂

Can’t Workout In The Morning – When Should I Exercise?

Now I know some of you are thinking, “I can’t workout in the morning, I would wake people up.”  I know exactly where you’re coming from.  When we lived in an apartment, I tried working out in the morning and unfortunately I did wake up our upstairs neighbors, whoops!  So that’s when I though to myself, when should I exercise then?  I had always worked out in the morning, but now I had an earlier schedule and couldn’t do that since it woke everyone up.  So if you’re in this situation, I totally understand where you’re coming from.

The next best option, is as soon as you can fit it into your schedule.  I’m always a fan of getting things done before you let distractions creep in.  So get it done as soon as possible and actually put it on your schedule.  If that means it’s on your lunch break, put it on your schedule.  For me, it was as soon as I got home from work.  I knew my first task was to get my workout in, so when I got home I immediately put on my workout clothes and got going.  If you let yourself get distracted by other things you can end up wasting time and ultimately skipping your workout if you have to get somewhere.

When Should I Exercise? – The Bottom Line

The bottom line if you’re asking ‘when should I exercise‘ is that it should be the time that you are least distracted or the least likely time to get interrupted.  It needs to be on your schedule, and you have to commit to doing it.  Don’t let yourself off the hook and skip a workout.  Plan it out and get it done!  If that’s in the morning like me, great, but if it’s in the afternoon or evening then just make sure you are giving it your all and not letting distractions get in the way.
