Top 5 Advantages to Having a Workout Partner

top 5 advantages to having a workout partnerIn three years of doing Beachody workout programs, I’ve always done them by myself.  I had my programs – Insanity, P90X, Body Beast, etc. and Rochelle had her programs – ChaLEAN Extreme and TurboFire.  We would workout at different times and each do our own thing.  That was definitely ok and it worked.  But with the release of P90X3, Rochelle told me she wanted to do it with me!  Needless to say I was pretty pumped to hear that!  I was also a bit surprised since I workout very early in the morning and she typically worked out on her lunch break or after work.  But now we’re about one week in, and I am absolutely loving it!  So with that in mind, I wanted to post my top 5 advantages to having a workout partner.

Top 5 Advantages to Having a Workout Partner

1) Accountability – Having a workout partner provides a ton of accountability.  There will be days that you don’t feel like working out, but if you know you can’t let your workout partner down, you are more likely to stick with it and do the workout.  Some days you will need a little boost and some days your partner will need a boost, hopefully that just happens on different days 🙂  It also helps for things like the bonus rounds in P90X, I’m sure you’re much less likely to skip part of a workout when you’re doing it with someone.

2) Competition – This is a huge benefit for me.  Sometimes when you’re working out by yourself, it can be easy to slack off on certain portions of a workout.  Maybe you take more breaks or just don’t put your all into a move.  When you have someone literally right next to you, it pushes you to do more and take fewer breaks.  Competing with someone just gives you a little extra push that it takes to get the most out of the workout.  I’ve worked out alone for years and can say that working out with Rochelle really makes me push just a little harder.

3) Safety – Staying safe while working out is critical.  One main reason people hurt themselves while working out is because of poor form.  Having a workout partner can really help in this area.  We don’t have a mirror in our workout room, so sometimes I can’t really tell what I look like doing certain moves.  Now, Rochelle can help give me pointers and correct my form while we’re working out and I can do the same for her.  It helps immensely to have her right there watching what I do.  So our form improves, and we stay safe.

4) Advice – Sometimes certain moves, especially in new workouts, are just confusing.  Or you don’t know what weight to choose.  Having a workout partner gives you someone to figure it out with.  If you’re confused on one particular move, it helps to talk through it and work on your form with your workout partner.  That way you figure out how to do moves correctly and can focus on putting your all into them sooner than if you were alone.  You can also help make recommendations on weights for the other person if they’re struggling a bit to pick the right one.

5) Fun!  Last, but certainly not least, is that having a workout partner is fun!  This is probably the number one advantage in my eyes.  I love working out with Rochelle.  I think it gives us both a sense of accomplishment, and is just fun to spend time together doing something we both enjoy.  I don’t know why we didn’t do this sooner 🙂  At the gym, it might be problematic to workout with a friend because it can turn into social hour pretty easy, but thankfully we have workouts to follow that don’t pause for our conversation!

So there you have it, my top 5 advantages to having a workout partner.  It really is fun to workout with someone else, and can give you a better workout.

What If I Don’t Have a Workout Partner?

If you don’t have a workout partner, that’s ok too.  Not everyone has someone who will do these workouts with them.  Sometimes it might even be a space issue, where 2 people would be too crowded.  If that’s your case and you’re looking for some of the same benefits, I would highly recommend finding someone or a team virtually.  I coach people for free, and my team has a great support group where you can get many of the same benefits.  We help hold each other accountable and motivate each other to do well and improve our health.  So if this is your situation and you’d like some support, you can go here to join my team and let us motivate you!

  1. […] Rochelle and I are about 3/4 the way through Phase 1 of P90X3, so I wanted to write up a bit of a review on how the workouts are going so far.  In case you missed it, we are doing the workouts together!  It’s our first time actually doing an entire workout program together, so it’s been fun to do that with P90X3.  We can help push each other and make sure our form is spot on.  I posted more thoughts on that here: Top 5 Advantages to Having a Workout Partner.
