Supplements I use

I often get questions around supplements, so I figured I would just write an article about the supplements I use that I think are very effective.  There are a couple things to consider when thinking about supplements.  The first is the question of if you really need them or not.  To get great results, I don’t think you necessarily have to supplement, but if you don’t, it will just take you longer to see the results you want.  The second is your budget.  Do you have extra room in your budget for supplements?  If you don’t, then don’t buy any!  You always want to make smart money decisions when it comes to workouts and supplements.  If you can find the room in your budget, then go for it!  So with that being said, here are the supplements that I use that have given me good results:

1) Shakeology If I could only take one supplement, this would be it.  With all the nutrients, minerals, protein, probiotics along with all the other great things in it I know I’m fueling my body with what it needs, especially after the intense workouts I put myself through.  It has helped me lose 30 lbs. and really fills me up.  I wrote a review which you can find here and there are also more details you can find here.

2) Protein powder It’s critical to fuel your muscles with lots of protein when you’re doing intense workouts, so I choose to supplement my protein need with protein powder.  It’s a lot more economical than getting all the protein I need from lean meats.  There are a couple kinds that I like.  I use Cytosport protein powder from Costco that’s only $32 for a 6 lb. bag and I also use Wheybolic Extreme 60 protein powder from GNC.  Wheybolic is more expensive but it also includes glutamine and arganine, which cuts down on having to buy them separately.  I use 2-3 scoops every day depending on how many grams I need to meet my goals.

3) Multivitamin I take a multivitamin every day to cover my bases.  I have used the ActiVit multivitamin that Beachbody makes and also Centrum multivitamins from Costco as well.  Neither of them give me an upset stomach, so I take one serving a day.

4) Recovery drink After really intense workouts your body is primed to take in nutrients and it’s important to get a good 4:1, carb to protein ratio immediately as soon as you can after the workout.  I use the P90X recovery drink, which I like.  It has glutamine and creatine in it, as well as the optimal 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein.  It really helps me recover quickly and not get as sore as I would otherwise.  There are plenty of other kinds of recovery drinks out there, but I like the P90X recovery drink, so that’s what I use.  You can learn more about it here.

5) Glutamine During intense workouts your body’s supply of glutamine gets depleted, so it’s important to replenish it with a glutamine supplement.  When I’m using Wheyabolic protein from GNC, I don’t need to take a separate glutamine supplement because it’s already in the protein powder.  But when I’m not taking that protein, I put 5 g in my recovery drink and I put another 5 g of glutamine powder in a protein shake after dinner.  I get my glutamine powder from GNC.

6) Creatine Creatine is another supplement that is naturally occuring in your body, and taking a creatine supplement will help you recover faster from your workouts.  I take 5 g with my recovery drink and 5 g in my protein shake after dinner.  I buy my creatine monohydrate powder from Target and it’s super cheap.  I also cycle this 2 months on and 1 month off.
