P90X Portion Plan

As I’ve been writing and thinking about the P90X Nutrition Guide I wanted to dedicate a post to the P90X Portion Plan.  At first, this can look like the most appealing plan to follow because it looks pretty basic.  In some senses that’s true, but in general, I find that it causes more confusion than anything.  So I typically recommend that people do not follow the P90X Portion Plan.

The P90X Portion Plan – Categorizing Foods

p90x portion planThis is my main beef with the P90X Portion Plan.  You are forced to categorize foods into separate silos like protein, carb, etc.  I see tons of questions on message boards about how to categorize this or that food.  Should Shakeology count as a protein, a carb or something else?  When you really think about it most foods don’t really fall completely into one category or another.  Almost every food is a combination of macronutrients, making it very difficult to figure out the P90X Portion Plan unless you’re making the exact foods out of the book.  Since I know most people don’t make the exact recipes I really steer people away from this approach. I get how they are trying to simplify things, but in my mind it just makes things confusing.

What Should You Do Instead of The P90X Portion Plan?

If you are serious about getting awesome results, then you want to get as specific as possible.  So instead of following the P90X Portion Plan, I would highly suggest you research the P90X Nutrition Guide, and as you use that, figure out your daily calorie goal and the percentages of protein/carbs/fat that you should be eating every day.  If you’re just starting out, the P90X Fat Shredder Plan is a great place to start.  But when you’re done figuring that all out, then you need to track what you eat!  I know many people really don’t want to track their calories, but it’s absolutely the best way to keep you on your nutrition plan.  And there are resources out there to help you.  I personally use myfitnesspal because it makes it super easy.  When you track everything you put in your mouth it not only helps you understand what you’re eating, but it’s another level of accountability because if you have that cookie or that pop you have to log it!  I personally don’t want to see how much it throws off my daily nutrition so I don’t eat them!

The Bottom Line With The P90X Portion Plan…

The bottom line is that I really discourage people from following the P90X Portion Plan.  Yes, you can get results if you follow it, I just don’t think it’s the best route to go.  The more accurate you can get with what you’re doing, the better your results will be.  I, along with tons of other people, have had the most success when we specifically plan what we need to eat and then follow through by tracking and monitoring it.  If you want the best results, that’s what you have to do!
