My Year in Review

A year ago, I was in the worst shape of my life.  I wasn’t working out consistently and my diet was poor.  I had just stepped on a scale to see the highest number I had ever seen, 217 lbs.  I knew I wasn’t in great shape, but I didn’t know that I was at my heaviest weight ever!  That was a bit of a shock, but it turned out to be a very good thing!  I realized how quickly I had gotten out of shape, but right then I decided I really needed to make a change.

I decided to give Insanity a try.  I liked that it didn’t use any weights or a pull-up bar because at the time I didn’t have access to either of those things.  I remember my first workout, and wow was it tough!  I had never gone through such an intense workout!  Little did I know that month 2 would be a whole new level of craziness!  During my first month, I gave my all during the workouts, but I really didn’t dial in my nutrition.  So after 1 month, I really didn’t see any results.  I was a little disappointed, but through finding my coach and reading up on how other people had seen great results, I knew that I needed to change what I was eating.  So I created a 1900 calorie meal plan and started drinking Shakeology every day.   I committed to my nutrition.  You can check that out here: 1900 calorie meal plan  Following my new meal plan and really digging deep, I ended up losing 17 lbs. during that second month!  Now I knew that the workouts, nutrition plans, and Shakeology really worked.

Then I decided to tackle P90X.  I had wanted to give it a try for a long time, and finally had a place to do pull-ups and had some decent dumbbells.  Insanity was tough, but P90X was a whole different animal!  Chest & Back and ARX on day 1 was killer.  I had never been so sore after a workout before!  I knew right away that I would love the program.  I stuck with my 1900 calorie meal plan and really pushed hard in the workouts.  I have always really enjoyed lifting weights, so P90X was a great program for me.  I ended up down another 10 lbs and was down to 8% body fat.  I really don’t think I had ever been in this good of shape in my life!

After 150 days, I went from 217 lbs. to 190 lbs. and from 23% body fat to 8% body fat.

After that I decided to jump into Asylum, which is Shaun T’s follow up to Insanity.  It incorporated more lifting along with the intense cardio.  It also has you using an agility ladder and speed rope, which are very fun!  I noticed a lot of improvement in my quickness and speed, so if you’re looking for improvement in sports performance, Asylum is a great program!   After completing Asylum, I created a hybrid schedule, which included workouts from Insanity, P90X and Asylum.  In my opinion, that gave me the best of the lifting routines as well as the cardio routines.  You can check out my hybrid schedule here:

To finish the year strong, I decided to do another round of P90X.  The main difference of this last round centered around nutrition.  For the last 90 days, I have been eating a vegan diet, which has been awesome!  I will write a whole article on my experience with this new diet, so there will be more details to come.  But I have to say that I have really enjoyed it and have seen some great results.

So with that said, here are my progress pictures to date.  I can’t believe how far I’ve come in just a year, but I do think I am an example of how when you decide to change, and you commit to the making the change, you will succeed.  For me this isn’t just a 30, 60 or 90 day change, it’s a lifestyle change.  Today, I weigh in at 183 lbs. and about 7% body fat, down 34 lbs. and 16% body fat!
