Healthy Memorial Day Tips

healthy memorial day tipsWith Memorial Day coming up, I wanted to put together a list of tips to help make this Memorial Day a little healthier.  I know it’s typically time to take a break, relax, fire up the grill and have a beer.  And while there’s nothing wrong with taking a break from things and spending time with family, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a time to pig out and put on pack on the pounds.  You can still have a great weekend and keep things healthy.  So with that, here are some healthy Memorial Day tips.

1) Be active – There’s no reason you have to just sit around all weekend.  If you’re not doing your workouts you can still get your body moving and burn some calories.  Organize a game of softball, play some yard games, go swimming, play catch in the yard or just take a walk with your family if it’s nice out.  It doesn’t have to be super intense, but you can still burn off some of those calories you’ll be eating.

2) Grill chicken or fish – Instead of having a big juicy cheeseburger, steak, hot dog or brat try grilling chicken or fish.  You can use some seasoning or marinade instead of tons of BBQ sauce.  But chicken or fish on the grill is still really tasty, but it’s much healthier than beef and contains way less saturated fat.  There’s no reason you can’t still enjoy grilling out, but just try to use some healthier meats.  Or you can be like me and try a veggie burger!

3) Eat your vegetables – Again, the grill can be your friend.  Try making veggie kabobs or just mix in some veggies with your meat on a kabob.  Grilled vegetables, like peppers or asparagus, are delicious and a good way to get yourself to eat some veggies.  Also, instead of reaching for the bag of chips, bring a veggie tray.  It’s a great way to have a healthy snack to munch on and won’t be so bad as snacking on chips or cookies all day.

4) Skip the mayo – Potato salad is a favorite at many Memorial Day gatherings, but it usually is loaded with mayo.  You can still enjoy your potatoes without the mayo, though.   Again the grill can be your friend.  Wrap some potatoes in tinfoil and make yourself a baked potato on the grill or cook some baked baby red potatoes in the oven.  Still great tasting but doesn’t have all the fat!

5) Drink water – I know it’s a very popular time to crack open a few beers or cans of pop, but these options are just going to give you empty calories and can contain tons of sugar.  So instead of having a six pack to yourself, maybe just have one and then switch to water.  It’s refreshing and will keep you hydrated on a hot day which is important.  Also, drunk driving can be a real problem on Memorial Day, and the last thing you should do is get behind the wheel if you’ve had a drink.  You want to stay healthy and alive!

6) Have fruit for dessert – There will probably be cake or cookies or ice cream for dessert, but that shouldn’t be your only option.  Fruit is nature’s candy!  Instead of going for the typical options, bring a bowl of cut-up fruit and indulge your sweet tooth with that instead.  I personally really like strawberries, grapes and pineapple as they are all sweet and juicy.  They really do satisfy my craving for something sweet.

Hopefully these healthy Memorial Day tips can help you enjoy yourself but not overindulge.  You should absolutely enjoy yourself this Memorial Day and hopefully you get to spend it with friends and family.  But the bottom line is that you don’t have to stuff your face the whole weekend and if there are not going to be healthy options where you’re going, bring them yourself!  I don’t think anyone is going to look at you funny if you follow these tips.  They’re just small changes that can make a big difference.  So have a fun Memorial Day, and remember to stay safe and keep it healthy!  And for those of you who have served our country in the military, thank you for your service!
