Getting Back On Track – Should I Re-start Or Keep Going?

getting back on trackLike many of my posts, this is inspired by questions I get all the time or read on message boards.  Inevitably, people stop working out or following their nutrition plan, and they want help getting back on track.  They haven’t worked out in a week or two or have completely fallen off the bandwagon with their nutrition.  Or maybe they’ve been traveling for work or nutrition and haven’t been doing much of anything for their health.  Sound familiar?  Well if it does, hopefully this post can help you figure out what to do as you’re getting back on track.

Getting Back on Track – Find Your Motivation

The most essential thing to getting back on track is finding your motivation again.  If you aren’t motivated to work or follow a nutrition plan, there’s no way you’re going to stick with it.  And if you’ve fallen off track, I’m guessing you have lost sight of your initial motivation.  I find that the people who get the best results and have the easiest time getting back on track are those that are very focused on why they’re taking their health seriously in the first place.  So if you’re just getting back on track, ask yourself why you even want to do it in the first place.  Do you want to get off some medications?  Do you want to be more active with your family?  Is your health getting in the way of enjoying certain things in life?  Do you just want to be more confident and have more energy?  Really think long and hard about this, and write it down!  I can’t stress it enough.  If you write down your “why” and make specific goals you will be much more likely to stick with it and won’t have to worry about getting back on track later, because you won’t fall off in the first place!

Getting Back on Track – Should You Re-start?

Now that you’ve decided that you’re getting back on track and know why you are doing it in the first place, you might be wondering if you should just re-start your program.  And that’s a great question.  Should you just pick up where you left off or should you re-start the whole thing?  When you’re getting back on track, it really might make sense to start totally over.  In my opinion, you should re-start your program, or the phase of the program you’re on if:

-It’s been more than 10 days since you’ve worked out.
-You didn’t get more than 30 days into your program in the first place.
-You weren’t focused when you started and didn’t make much progress before you quit.

There might be exceptions to those rules, but generally, if you’re getting back on track and you fall into those categories, I would suggest just re-starting your program.

Getting Back on Track – Picking Up Where You Left Off

When you’re getting back on track sometimes it does make sense to pick up where you left off.  It doesn’t always make sense to just start  the whole program over.  I understand that sometimes life gets in the way of your program, but if it’s a shorter break, you might want to just start where you left off.  Generally, I think it’s ok to pick up where you left off if:

-It’s been less than 10 days since you worked out.
-You were well into your program.
-You haven’t completely lost your mental focus.
-You’ve already seen some good results and haven’t put all the weight back on that you had previously lost.

Again, there are always exceptions and you have to do what you’re ok with, but in my opinion, these are good guidelines for when you should just pick up where you left off.
