Burned DVD’s

I wanted to address the topic of burned, ripped-off and stolen copies of workouts like P90X, Insanity, etc.  Buying used or borrowing DVD’s fit into this too, but they’re slightly different.  I know plenty of people who have burned or copied copies of P90X,  I think most people probably do, and I really think that’s too bad.  So for each category, I’ll tell why I think they’re not ideal.

Burned/Copied:
First off, if you’re burning or copying someone else’s P90X/Insanity/etc. you are just plain stealing.  I don’t care if it’s just on the internet, you’re still stealing the program.  And Beachbody actually has a team dedicated to finding and prosecuting people who do steal and burn copies.  Granted they mostly go after people who are selling the fake copies, but they have a strong stance on anyone involved with the ripped-off copies.  Stealing the copy does actually irritate me a bit.  Beachbody and Tony Horton put in a lot of hard work to bring a world-class workout program to people, so I really feel it’s worth paying the company the $120 it costs to purchase P90X.  It’s really robbing them of what they deserve.  Also, if it was sold in stores, I doubt so many people would feel as comfortable just taking it off a shelf and walking out.   It’s really no different than shop-lifting, except it’s just online.

So I’m not only frustrated with the fact that so many people are stealing the copy, but I also find that people who steal it are much less likely to complete the program and stick to it.  Since they don’t pay anything for it, I feel like they are less passionate about the idea of doing the program.  When you do pay the $120, it gives you more of a commitment to stick with it.  You’ve already committed the $120, so you better be doing that workout!  So that is another huge reason why I really feel you should actually buy the product.  The people I know that have stolen it rarely stick with it.

Buying Used/Borrowing
Really, if you want to buy a used copy or borrow, I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with doing that.  If someone has a copy they’re willing to part with, then it’s fine if you want to buy it from them or just borrow for a period of time (but really, they should keep it because they need to do the workouts!).  But there still are a couple issues.  First, with buying used, often times you only get the workout discs and none of the extras, which includes the nutrition guide.  That is a huge loss!  The nutrition guide is really the key to getting awesome results, so it would be a shame to not have that.  Also, if you ever have a problem with one of the DVD’s, then you can’t go to Beachbody and ask for a replacement because you didn’t buy it from them!  Their customer service is exceptional in my opinion, but they’re not going to replace scratched discs for someone who didn’t purchase it through them, which is understandable.  So you lose out on that factor, but you’re still paying for it which can be motivating.

If you borrow the DVD’s from a friend or family member, again, I think that’s ok, but you run into the same problem with the burned copy.  When you borrow it you’re not really committing yourself to the program, and you’re much less likely to finish it and actually see results.  It’s fine to borrow the DVD’s to try the workouts and see if you like it, but if you do, I would highly suggest returning the borrowed copies and buying a new set!  It’s just something about actually paying for them that can really make some people stick  with it, and to me that is totally worth it.  The ultimate goal is to be healthy and get in shape, right?  Then why not set yourself up for success and give yourself one more reason to stick with the program and change your health for the better!

So these are my 2 cents on the issue.  I have been asked to burn copies/lend copies of workouts.  There’s not a chance that I will burn a copy for someone else, so don’t bother asking!  But I will lend copies out from time to time, but I have to limit the time they’re borrowed.  Especially since I like to make hybrids that use all the different workouts!  So if you’re thinking of starting a program, help yourself commit to it and make the purchase!

You hit the nail on the head!If you dont pay for it, how committed will you really be!

There seems to be a culture where the same people who would never think of shoplifting think it's ok to burn copies of DVD's. It's the same thing, and people need to be honest with themselves and do the right thing.

I'm glad you're committed! I know some people who can still be extremely committed even if they didn't pay for their program, but most people I've seen fall off the bandwagon way too quick. But I'm glad you're loving the workouts!

I know, it really bugs me that people somehow think it's different when they download information when they would never actually shoplift it from a store. It's most likely because they feel there's less a chance of getting caught, but that's a pretty poor reason to be stealing the product!
