Bulking Pt. 2 (for women)

I find that women often have the exact opposite concern than the guys do when it comes to bulking up.  I’ve heard it a ton, and you might even be thinking it yourself, “I don’t want to lift weights because I don’t want to look like a man.”  Often times women tend to think that if they lift weights they’re going to look really bulky and more manly than they want.  I find this really interesting because men often find it incredibly hard to put on as much muscle as they want and actually get that bulked-up look.  What women who avoid weight training for this reason don’t understand is how hard it is to put on a lot of muscle to the point where you look bulky.

So instead of doing any resistance training, women tend to hit the treadmill or elliptical and just do their cardio workouts.  While you can lose weight and look trim doing cardio, they’re really missing out if they’re not incorporating any weight training!  For one thing, weight training is actually good for your bones.  It strengthens your bones and can help women avoid osteoporosis.  And for those of you who are ChaLEAN Extreme fans, you know exactly what I’m talking about, and what Chalene talks about all the time.  Muscle burns fat!  The more lean muscle you have, the more calories you will burn per hour, even when you’re not working out.

So when you do strength training, not only will you burn calories during the workout, but when you have more muscle, you’ll actually burn more calories throughout the day!  Whereas with cardio workouts you’re not really building muscle, so most of the calorie burn only occurs during your workout.  I don’t know about you, but I would rather have my body be a fat burning machine all day!

So my advice to all the women out there is to start adding weight training to your workout routine!  ChaLEAN Extreme is a great overall program and is geared a little more towards women and P90X is also a great choice!  I highly recommend both programs for any woman looking to incorporate weight training into their workouts.  You’re not going to look bulky, you’re just going to be leaner and burn more calories throughout your day which will help you shed pounds and fat.  Who doesn’t want that?
