Best Time to Workout

A common question that I hear a lot is around when you should workout.  Should you workout in the morning?  Should you workout at night?  Should you workout on an empty stomach or after a meal?  These are all really good questions, and I really don’t think there is any hard and fast rule when it comes to when you should workout, but I do have some advice on the topic.

Personally, I like to workout first thing in the morning when I get up.  I drink a little bit of water, but I don’t eat anything.  For me, I think I feel best when I workout on an empty stomach.  I like getting my workout out of the way so I don’t have to think about it the rest of the day and it really gives me an energy boost.  I also find that my morning is the easiest time to control my schedule.  I don’t often have conflicts at 5:00 AM!  I know this doesn’t work for everyone, though.  Some of you may feel like you don’t have enough energy if you haven’t eaten anything and are trying to workout.  Personally I get somewhat of an upset stomach if I’ve eaten in the hour before I workout so this works best for me.  Also, right after my workout I like to take my recovery drink immediately, then shower, then eat breakfast before I go to work.

Working out in the evening or after work is also a great option too for those of you who aren’t morning people.  I have had days startig at 5 AM at work, so occasionally I have to workout after work too.  If there is no way to workout early in the morning, I would suggest eating a light snack and hour to an hour 1/2 before you start your workout and make sure you have protein in the snack.  This will help fuel your workout and shouldn’t upset your stomach too much.  I don’t think working out right after dinner is a great idea because all that food in your stomach can make you feel pretty bad if you’re really bringing it in a workout.  I would suggest making your workout the first thing you do when you get home if you can.  That way you can’t procrastinate and then end up not getting your workout in.

No matter whether you workout early in the morning, during the day, or at night, just make sure to plan it into your schedule.  If you don’t plan when you’re going to workout, then it’s way more likely to not happen as your day gets busy.  Make your workout a priority and you won’t forget it!  You’ll find it’s easy to cut out time in front of the tv or computer to fit your workout in.   And when you get done with your workout you can feel great knowing that you’ve taken one more step towards your goal!  Try different times out if what you’re doing isn’t currently working, but most importantly, keep pushing play!!
